"If route control footage is also used for purposes other than speed control, we motorists will be forced to take shortcuts. Things must not be allowed to get that far with Big Brother in our country.

So says Bas Filippini, chairman of the Privacy First foundation. He believes the system violates the privacy of innocent road users. Yesterday, a case on a traffic fine following a section control was heard in Utrecht. It involved a violation that Filippini himself committed on purpose to provoke a principled ruling from the judge.

A network of 150 to 200 cameras also records license plates of motorists who are not speeding. Moreover, the images are kept for 72 hours, with no legal basis. They are also used for purposes other than speed checks , Filippini argues.

The prosecution argues that it is allowed to take and keep images. Especially since the privacy violation is limited. Verdict 12 May."
