Metro, 28 April 2011: 'Fingerprint storage off the table'

"The national database for fingerprints will not materialise for the time being. The storage of fingerprints at local level will also be halted. This was decided by Interior Minister Piet Hein Donner on Wednesday. The Privacy First foundation therefore spoke of "a historic day".

"The already stored fingerprints of 4.5 million innocent citizens will now have to be destroyed," Privacy First reports. The foundation has opposed the storage of fingerprints since the introduction of the new Passport Act in 2009, claiming it violates the right to privacy.
The House of Representatives also welcomed Donner's decision. The House had doubts about the reliability of using the fingerprints and also whether the data could be stored with sufficient security. (...)"
