Metro.co.uk, 30 January 2015: 'Entering license plate when parking not mandatory'

"The municipality of Amsterdam cannot force motorists to enter their registration numbers when parking. This was ruled by the court in the capital on Friday. Motorists are therefore not required to do so, but must be able to prove that they have paid by other means.

All parking meters in Amsterdam currently require the entry of license plates. This will allow inspectors to check the license plates of parked cars with a scanning car.

Chairman Bas Filippini of the Privacy First foundation, which advocates the protection of private data, had filed a lawsuit against the municipality. He had entered fabricated license plate details when parking his car and was subsequently fined. By showing the receipt from the parking machine, he was able to prove that he did pay."
