DEN HAAG - Major cities are to invest heavily in camera surveillance at railway stations to prevent terrorist attacks. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague, Eindhoven and Leiden have jointly received almost 25 million euros in subsidies from Deputy National Coordinator for Counterterrorism Theo Bot.

NS and ProRail will work on a nationwide system of camera surveillance.

Public transport is "vulnerable" to terrorist attacks, according to the NCTb, due to the combination of vital infrastructure and "soft targets".

The cameras should prevent terrorist attacks, speed up the detection process, support emergency response and improve cooperation between parties.
